I've got a long way to go, but I thought I'd report in.  When I joined this challenge, I thought it would be no problem.  Well, yes and no.  I live in NV and its hot and dry mostly.  So I'm growing in containers, of which many are "ready to go" but now it's mid winter and I'm preparing for better weather and getting my seeds started.  I DID get radishes and lettuce up this fall, and we ate the radishes (they tasted awesome, and of course, I don't like radishes, but I ate these!).  The lettuce only came up in one clump, and I was kind of using it as an experiment.  It is encased in ice (or was a few days ago when I checked).  That container needs some drainage.  Anyway, so my containers aren't perfect, and some of the watering needs tweaking, but the basics are there, now I just have to follow thru and get those seeds started.   Thanks everyone for your ideas and your success stories!  I'm hoping that I will have one by mid Spring!!!    

I use stackable styophome like containers.  They stack cati corner to each other so the corners are where you plant the strawberries.  They are square, so it's four plants to a container, and I usually stack six containers high.  The containers are about 12X12X8, and they have a hole in the middle, so they are easy to stack on a metal pole or pvc pole, what have you.  Then I use the coconut fiber mixed with potting soil, and it holds the water really well.  I use a watering system, once or twice a day is plenty.    I have not tried this system in NV, where I am now.  I plan to set this up this Spring, so I will update everyone on how well this goes, and will post pics.  I plan to plant strawberries in one of the stacks, and herbs in another.  I don't know yet but I will have two other stacks.   I purchased these stackables about 11 years ago and they are still in great shape.  They have only spent two seasons out in the weather however.  But they have stored well (or so they seem).   Good luck!

Hi everyone, I just RECEIVED four giant pumpkin seeds that I'm hoping to plant this spring, so I can share those with interested parties in this group in the fall.  I'd love to trade for other kinds of seeds.  My mom is bringing me some crowder peas that have been "in the family" for at least 3 mabye 4 generations (and they are "organic")...so I could maybe part with a few of those if anyone wants to trade for those.  I'm not sure how many she is bringing me, but I told her I was wanting to plant a bunch this spring.  I don't know if "crowder" pea is the correct name, but my family is from TN so that is what we call them... they are brown peas after they are canned, and they are about the size of canned green peas, mabye a bit smaller.  They are starchy, but really good tasting, we always eat them with cornbread and tomatoes, and mashed potatoes. Yum.

I have no grass, but I do have some ornamental landscaping plants that need watering, which I could kick myself now.  Everything that dies is getting replaced with a container garden or a fruit tree, or something edible.  The landscaping eats up alot of water, with nothing to show for it, so the containers (that are slowly replacing the plants) are starting to give back!!!
