This is why supporting small private seed companies, and growing your own, is a good idea. It's the only way to keep heirloom varieties alive. Everytime we purchase from a conglomerate, we put another nail in the coffin of our food supply, security, and freedom.

"Part of the effort to defend pesticides was actually funded by taxpayers through a highly controversial $180,000 grant to the Alliance for Food and Farming from the state of California – a pass-through of federal funds provided under the 2008 farm bill." This is so aggravating! I doubt that most of the public would give it a second thought, though. It amazes me how conditioned people are to pesticides and herbicides. We have grown up believing this is good for us, and that the world would starve if not for "magical" pesticides.

Kendra, I don't think you have a jalapeno. Type a Google search for hot black peppers to try to find a match for what you have. There are several varieties of peppers that start out black and ripen to orange or red. They are HOT. I grew a compact plant called Golden Nugget, which started out black and turned to orange. They we only rated a 3 on the hotness scale, but I could not eat them. Whoooo! They were scorchers! Andrea

I'm not sure about regular ants, but carpenter ants will travel pretty far. I just got an email from Arbico. They are having a BOGO sale on beneficial nematodes. I'm going to order. They eat bad soil bugs, including ants. I used nematodes from a local store several weeks ago, but I'm still finding wire worm and some weird segmented thing I've never seen before, so I don't think they were any good. Hopefully, my next batch will be better.
