I bought three blueberry bushes this February and planted them in pots. I have the varieties Misty, O'Neal and Jewel - all are low chill varieties suitable to my mild climate. The pots I have them in are 18 inches across at the top, and it took 2 1/2 large bags of acidic potting soil to fill them, plus some small bark bits as mulch for the tops (it's hot here). Look for either "acid potting soil" or soil for azaleas - same thing, both are acidic and perfect for blueberries. My plants are currently slightly more than twigs, but I did get 3 oz of fruit off of them this year. That was about 35 berries, by the way :-) Considering that our intitial investment was $70 in plants, pots and soil, those $2 berries were still pretty darn good!
They were just twigs when I bought them, and they have filled out a bit since then - still not what I'd call a bush, but growing healthy. I can't wait for their summer growth, and next years harvest. They are currently placed on the patio that gets a good 8 hours of sun a day, with some afternoon shade. In the winter, that same location is too shady, so I'm planning on moving the pots to a sunnier location seasonally or as needed.
So all I'm doing with my blueberries is giving them a good sized pot, acidic soil and regular fertilizer. So far, so good. Good luck with your plants!
