After spending a wad of money on straw yesterday, we spent the rest of the money today on compost and got home and found out we are going to need more. Remember how I mentioned before how every trip is an adventure....today was no different. Started out with me directing my hubby in backing to hook up the trailer. After a few unsuccessful backings, he decided to stop at the point where the bumper rammed into the hitch. Apparently my hand gestures went unheeded supposedly because of me being in his bind spot or some such thing...heh. Once "HE" got the trailer hooked up....cause I think I had some really important stuff to do in the house at the time.... Then, we were off... Well, about half way into our seemed like 100 mile trip (actually about 30mi) the waterpump blew! The ol' beast was heating up and smoking and spewing.....no wait that was earlier when "WE" were hooking up the trailer. hehe. Had to pull off and find ... less

We started two month ago with a nice layer of soiled hay (sheep bedding from a neighbor) and leaves. It started as a 4” layer and is now down to about 1.5” with a lot of grass coming through. *chuckle* The plan for this weekend is to go visit the neighbor again and clean out their supply of sheep bedding, and to hit up another friend for their loose hay (ie. they get a cleaner hay loft and we get more mulch).
The shortage of cheap/free hay has been our biggest challenge thus far. I am already making plans to hit up Pumpkin Patches next year around October to see if I can ‘inherit’ their left over straw/hay bales once they are done using them as décor for their sites. With any luck I will stockpile enough for at least one growing season!
In the meantime, I may need to break down and buy some bales. less

FoodForThoughtOU812: We are planning on trying the square foot garden also. We'll have to see if we have any time and money left to do it? :D I'd like to try all kinds of different ways to grow if time and money allow....

After calling around we finally found some straw.."clean" straw. Dispite the cold and wind today we got it spread out about 2" thick on the beds, watered it all down and said good-nite to them for another day. Going to get compost tomorrow...oh boy, another adventurous trip to town! I'll keep you posted....to be continued.....

soonerpeach: This is also my first year trying this. I have read everything I could find on it. Still in the planning stages for me. I am doing this and square foot gardening this year to compare.

We decided to go with the "no dig" Lasagna garden to save aggravation. Little did we know.... Here is our experience so far... We scavenged for cardboard at all the local grocery stores. That was loads of fun. Got it home and started laying it out....and along came the winds, soon followed by the monsoons of MO, LOL. So, in this morning we salvaged what cardboard we could and took the soggy mess and re-did the layout. Next we didn't have enough newspaper to cover it all and could find any to go get anywhere. So, we stopped to re-think and re-group. Decided to go to town and get some mulch next. That was another whole adventure, don't have time to tell ya about it now. Got the mulch home and still didn't have any newspapers, said the heck with it and spread on the mulch anyway..... Not knowing what we were doing, we first made one big ...I don't know maybe a 20x30' plot, it's the one that blew awa... less
Here ya go ...here is a refresher on what has traspired so far..I decieded to move this from comments to a new disscussion in case anyone might have a similar experience. :DBeing new to MO and it's scarcity of an abundance of "good" soil with rocks being
