I frequent our local Family Place centre several times a week. 3 years ago they received a tiny plot of land and we started a little garden group. Now 3 years later, we've actually established a real group and we received a small grant this year from Vancouver Coastal Health for a food sustainability project! I, like most of the parents are very new to gardening, so this is an exciting venture for us. We meet every Monday to learn and garden and starting next week, we're offer a once a month program for preschool aged kids and their parents! I'm really excited to have been able to help develop the program. Right now we have 12 families for the preschool program and 6 families that show up regularily for the weekly meetings. We started with 2 families 3 years ago, and are hoping to make it to 10 by the end of this year!
I've created a blog for it, http://powellriversprouts.wordpress.com - Our growing season is just started, so it's a brand new site, but I'm hoping to be able to update it 3-4 times a week and offer a sneak peek in to our little gardening world!
I wanted to share, because the Dervaes really had a profound effect on us as far as getting this program up and running. I don't know where we would have been or ended up if we hadn't come upon their movie at our local film festival. I just wanted to let you know that what you do will help to make a change in our community for future generations!
