I have been gone fishing in Northern Nevada for a week to catch the infamous Trout in the Wildhorse reservoir. Before I left I planted a fall garden for the first time ever in my life. I planted lettuce, broccoli, and carrots. All are supposed to be fall cold weathe crops.

When I returned this is what I saw for the lettuce planted. It really looked like a patch of weeds to me. I found the package and read the information about the seeds. It said that this was Q's Special Medley that was chosen by Chef John Platt and exhibits flavors, textures, and colors as varied as the acclaimed cuisine of Q's restaurant in the historic Boulderado Hotel. Imagine that? I have grown acclaimed cuisine of Q's restaurant. .... It still looks like weeks to me.
The lesson learned here is to buy seeds for the fall in the spring when the spring garden is being planted. I looked all over town to find this lonely package of lettuce seed. Now I can see why it was still on the one and only seed rack at the lockal nursery. I'm learning that seeds are just not seeds as they were in my Mother's garden days.
It's good to be home but I'm thinking I have a lot to learn about growing fall gardens. I think I'll let it grow awhile and see what becomes of Q's acclaimed cuisine. I might even try a sample just to see what Chef John Platt feeds his customers in the historic Boulderado Hotel.
The broccoli? There are two little plants from the eight that I panted. Germination was not high on the list for broccoli nor was it all that great for the carrots either. Out of 80 seeds planted I could only find about four carrot plants. Overall the fall garden turned out to be pretty pathetic. Ah, well, there's always next spring.
The foreclosure property that I'm trying to buy has gone into the second stage which is sending a notice to the property owner to pay up or else. The Land Reutilization Commission has excepted my bid so now we wait for a response from the owner for 60 days. Patience patience patience. I just might start cleaning up a spring planting area before I get the deed to the property. If I don't get the property well then it will have been a good deed for the land owner. What do you think?
